MOOC platform edX have announced the launch of an Access for All Scholarship Campaign which will cover 100% of the cost of obtaining verified credentials for all qualifying learners.
While the majority of edX courses are free to audit on edx.org, learners have to pay a fee if they choose to gain a verified credential upon completion of a course. Most courses already offer up to a 90% discount on verified certificates to learners who cannot afford to pay the full price, however, a few courses and programs are not eligible. The new scholarships are a response to the economic struggle and job loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and will cover 100% of the cost of an edX course or program.
Over the next three years, edX aim to raise $10M for their scholarship campaign in order to "radically increase the number of people who can gain access to the knowledge, skills, and financial mobility needed to propel their lives, their communities, and the world forward." The first Access for All scholarship is the Macquarie Group Scholarship - a $1M scholarship program to support low-income and underrepresented groups of learners in the following countries that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19: the United States, Australia, India, and the United Kingdom. EdX plan to announce more named scholarships in the near future.
