A few years ago, you could take MOOCs on Coursera for free AND get a certificate at the end without having to pay. Now it seems the only way to get a certificate is to pay for the course. Is there any way to get a free certificate?

It depends on the committee reviewing your application and the number of applicants. For increasing your chance, explain throughly why you need the certificate, and why you can't afford it. Pay attention to questions asked on the application form, and you can also finish some weeks of the course before you apply for a certificate. Good luck!
