The University of Malaya (UM) is the oldest national university in Malaysia. Its beautiful 750-acre campus lies within the heart of Kuala Lumpur city. The university comprises of 12 faculties, two academies, three centres and four institutes that comprehensively cover various disciplines including medicine, science, technology, social sciences and humanities. Additionally, the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) is the biggest teaching hospital in Malaysia.

In 2006, the University of Malaya was accorded a research university status. Since then, six research clusters and six UM Centres of Excellence were established to promote research activities in UM. In 2015, it was given a 6-star rating by the Ministry of Higher Education and maintained its status as the top research university in Malaysia in the last few years.

The newly released QS World University Rankings 2019 reported a Malaysian university being positioned among the world top 100 universities for the first time. University of Malaya (UM), ranked 87, made this landmark achievement in the history of higher education of Malaysia by moving up 27 places from last year. The rapid rise in its ranking by 80 places since 2014 placed UM within the top 9% of 1,011 institutions ranked by QS.
